Nascido em uma das ilhas do arquipélago de Penghu, na Costa Oeste de Taiwan, que, na época era território pertencente ao governo japonês, Yamamoto Shohei (山本昌平) foi naturalizado na cidade de Kumamoto, Província de Fukuoka, a 17 de janeiro de 1938, realizando seus estudos na Tokyo Toritsu Edogawa Koto Gakkô (東京都立江戸川高等学校), uma escola pública localizada no Distrito de Edogawa, na Área Metropolitana de Tóquio, onde concluíu o ensino médio.
Em 1960, começou a carreira como ator, no Teatro Furansu-za (フランス座), onde conheceu o diretor Wakamatsu Koji (若松孝二, 1936-2012) e o roteirista, ator e cineasta Yamatoya Atsuchi (大和屋竺, 1937-1993), considerados os introdutores da Nouvelle Vague no Japão.
A Nouvelle Vague, que no Japão deu origem ao estilo 'Pinku Eiga'(ピンク映画), foi um movimento cinematográfico surgido na França no início da década de 60, caracterízado por suas obras independentes, realizadas na maioria por diretores iniciantes e produzidos por pequenos estúdios, que costumavam demonstrar ações que iam além ou contra as regras do cinema comercial tradicional da época.
Yamamoto começou a carreira no cinema no dia 28 de outubro de 1964, atuando no filme independente 'Yoru Dake no Mibojin'(夜だけの未亡人), do diretor Miyaguchi Kei (宮口圭), depois participando de 'Nureta Onna' (濡れた女), da Companhia Yamabe Prod. (ヤマベプロ), em outubro de 1965, e 'Shiro no Jinzô Bijo'(白の人造美女) de Wakamatsu Koji, em julho de 1966.
Em julho de 1968, participou de 'Shikiyoku no Hate' (色欲の果て), dos Estúdios Nikkatsu (日活), que foi sua primeira aparição em um trabalho de uma grande companhia. Pouco tempo depois, naquele mesmo ano, assinou contrato com os Estúdios Toei onde estreou no dia 28 de setembro, no drama de época 'Zankoku Ijo Gyakutai Monogatari Genroku Jokeizu' (残酷・異常・虐待物語 元禄女系図).
Em 1969, atuou nos filmes 'Onsen Anma Geisha' (温泉あんま芸者) e 'Onsen Ponbiki Jochu' (温泉ポン引き女中), quando passou a participar de trabalhos de ação e tornou-se integrante da trupe 'Akuyaku Shokai' (悪役商会), um grupo de atores, liderados pelo ator e ex-jogador de beisebol Yana Nobuo (八名信夫, 1935- ), especializados em interpretar gângsters e vilões.
Em 1974, atuou nos filmes 'Boryokugai' (Violência de Rua, 暴力街) e 'Onna Hissatsu Ken' (Mulher Punho Mortal, 女必殺拳), além de fazer sua primeira aparição em uma série: no quinto episódio do policial 'Birdie Daisakusen' (バーディー大作戦), exibida pela emissora TBS (Tokyo Broadcast System) entre os meses de maio de 1974 e 1975.
Ainda em 1975, Yamamoto participou do filme 'Kareinaru Tsuiseki' (華麗なる追跡), das séries policiais 'Taiyo ni Hoero' (太陽にほえろ!) e 'Hijo no License' (非情のライセンス), dos dramas históricos 'Ken to Kaze to Komori Uta' (剣と風と子守唄) e 'Oedo Sosamo' (大江戸捜査網), além de fazer sua estréia nos tokusatsu (seriados de aventura com efeitos especiais), interpretando o vilão Oirusuneku (オイルスネーク) em 'Seigi no Shinboru Kondoruman' (正義のシンボル コンドールマン), produzido pela antiga NET TV (hoje TV Asahi, entre os meses de março e setembro daquele ano, baseados na obra do escritor Kawauchi Kohan (川内康範, 1920-2008).
Suas experiências atuando como vilão por décadas contribuiram para seu hábito de realizar palestras sobre o tema de violência, além de fazer trabalho voluntário em casas de repouso para idosos, onde se apresenta tocando harmônica, um talento que cultiva desde a infância.

Okoma (literally, Red Cherry) was a woman gambler until she retired from the yakuza world. Two years later, she returns home, and finds that the big boss has been assassinated and his daughter is having trouble keeping things in line against the rival gang headed by the men who killed her father. Okoma decides to avenge her former boss and help his daughter, a former friend of hers. She recruits her own gang, starting with an expert knife-fighter, her former lover. After a fight, the new Gang Leader captures and tortures Okoma sadistically.
Henry Nakatani
Shihomi Etsuko plays a race car driver who also lends out her services to the Japanese Secret Service. Although there really isn't much of a "chase" to be seen, Shihomi does pursue a cartel of drug runners and assorted Japanese yakuza types. While the story is pure 70's exploitation and gritty crime drama, the best reason to see it is for the Martial Arts Action of Etsuko Shihomi. The action is over-the-top and at times hilarious (i.e. Shihomi battling the lead criminal atop a moving gondola or Shihomi battling a whip-wielding Catholic Nun).
