Uma equipe de uma platorma civil de exploração de petróleo se vê repentinamente com a missão de tentar resgatar o USS Montana, um submarino nuclear que afundou misteriosamente com 156 tripulantes e, após o ocorrido, não houve mais contato. A plataforma é usada para a "Operação Salvo", a operação de resgate que visa resgatar a tripulação do Montana, pois apesar de saberem onde está o submarino um furacão se aproxima e, assim, a Marinha não terá tempo hábil de chegar ao local. Com isso, a equipe da plataforma se torna a melhor opção para realizar o salvamento, ficando acertado que o tenente Coffey (Michael Biehn) supervisionará as operações. Entretanto, Bud Brigman (Ed Harris), um mergulhador que chefia a plataforma, diz à operação que acaba de pressentir que sua equipe corre perigo, mas Brigman não poderia imaginar que iria se deparar com algo totalmente surpreendente.
