10-year-old Kathy prefers pigtails to curls and runs away for the day to avoid a hair appointment. While she's off having adventures with her best pal Jeeter, her parents clash over how to handle the situation. Kathy's mother worries that her daughter doesn't "fit in" while her father believes she's "just an individual" and should be allowed to grow up at her own pace. At the end of the day, Kathy must return home to face the inevitable.

This film is made up of three segments that share no plot but have a general thematic relationship. In the first segment, Virginia and her three children are left by her shiftless husband and she is courted by an old beau who is now divorced. In the second, a divorced woman reacts to some unexpected revelations from her aged father. In the third, a childless, middle-aged social worker is swept into an affair with a young cab driver and finds herself pregnant.

Em 1945, um veterano da Segunda Guerra Mundial retorna para casa, em Avalon Bay, New Jersey, para encontrar a sua namorada que terminou com ele e está saindo com um novo homem. Ele decide matá-los na dança de graduação. 35 anos depois da primeira dança, desde o acontecimento, o assassino está de volta e começa a matar as pessoas que vão à festa. Por outro lado, o xerife George Fraser está no "annual fishing trip" e deixa a cidade para diretor Mark London, que investiga as matanças com a sua (quase) namorada, Pam McDonald.
