Like any industrious coastal town or city, Rio de Janeiro's port region has always been a hub for the confluence of cultures, nationalities and identities. Since 2013, it has also formed the basis of a research project for filmmaker Julia De Simone. Her third feature-length film – which was supported by IFFR’s Hubert Bals Fund in 2014 – shifts away from straightforward documentary and towards a more fictionalised form as it presents the story of Muanza, a woman born in the Kingdom of Kongo in the early nineteenth century and trafficked to Brazil, who awakens to find herself in the present, roaming the streets of Rio’s rapidly changing port region, known as ‘Pequena Africa’, or Little Africa.

After his mother’s death, Lucas drives from São Paulo to Northeast Brazil to sell a stretch of land that belonged to her. To do this, he has to get the consent of Robson, an indigenous half-brother he has never met. He keeps a low profile at his destination, presenting himself as a tourist in this dusty town ravaged in the name of development. But Josy, his adolescent niece, senses that Lucas has other motivations for his visit.

"Utopia" é um ensaio fílmico sobre a descoberta de uma cidade: o Rio de Janeiro e sua beleza oculta, que mantém-se distante de quem não a vive de dentro. A beleza do que não é óbvio, do suor cotidiano, dos olhares que se cruzam em meio a ruídos incessantes, do caos urbano, do calor intenso que aquece e ao mesmo tempo estabelece distâncias. A partir de uma metáfora sobre a grandiosidade e beleza de duas cidades – Paris e Praga, é realizado um relato observacional e poético da trajetória de uma jovem imigrante, que conhece e apresenta a cidade para além dos mitos e da imagem vendida pela TV.
