Muriel and her mother leave their home for good and a freak occurrence leaves them stranded in the country. They beg a woman to let them stay and a shaky friendship develops between the two families.
Eduardo Peña and Angel Ruiz are two Spanish actors who are on tour in Argentina. They try to achieve success there with a play that speaks of man and his passage through life, but the spectators are becoming increasingly scarce. One day his old car breaks down and they stop at Zapallares, a lost town. There, on the eve of the municipal elections, they meet an old friend, Professor Roberto Tolosa (Dario Grandinetti), critical of the construction of a new hotel and with the political class of the place and that will try to reopen a theater with the help of their fifth-year students, despite opposition from politicians.
On the way to his exile in Lisbon, Mario meets Silvia, a widow who turns out to be one of his admirers. Silvia has inherited a fortune, leading Mario to resume his career, eventually falling for him. Although Mario has relations with her, he makes it clear that will never fall in love. In Madrid, Juan Pepita and resume their relationship, and because of this the jilted Nena John Colman murders before Pepita, after being arrested. Pepita accepts a contract in Argentina, reunited with Mario. There he meets Tulio, who after starting a relationship with singer eventually ask marriage.
Juan remembers his childhood spent during the fifties in Argentina, when he lived doubts, fears and conflicts typical of the passage towards adolescence, surrounded by his family and the neighbors of the neighborhood
