Ray (Nick Nolte) trabalha como árbitro de baseball em uma escola de sua cidade. Sentindo-se velho e desiludido, ele não vê esperança em sua vida, até o dia em que sua casa é atacada por um grupo de adolescentes baderneiros. Enquanto a maioria consegue fugir, Dave (Trevor Morgan), um jovem problemático é pego em flagrante por Ray, que faz um pacto com o rapaz – se Dave consertar o estrago, ele não o entregará à polícia. Cumprindo com sua promessa, o garoto passa a frequentar constantemente sua casa, e ambos vão criando e estreitando um forte laço de amizade. Para completar, Ray pede um segundo favor a Dave, que é o de acompanhá-lo e fingir ser seu filho durante o 40° encontro do colegial.
