Em 2069, um planeta é descoberto na mesma órbita da Terra, mas localizado no lado oposto do Sol, tornando-o invisível. O Conselho Europeu de Exploração Espacial (EUROSEC) decide enviar o astronauta norte-americano Glenn Ross (Roy Thinnes) e o cientista britânico John Kane (Ian Hendry), via nave espacial, para explorar o outro planeta. Depois de uma aterrissagem desastrosa, Ross acorda ao saber que Kane está perto da morte e, aparentemente, eles retornaram à Terra, como evidenciado pela presença do diretor do Conselho e sua equipe. On a Caribbean island, a rich landowner's son, Maxwell Fleury, is fighting for political office against black labor leader David Boyeur. As if the contentious election weren't enough, there are plenty of scandals to go around: Boyeur has a secret white lover and Fleury's wife, Sylvia, is also having an affair. And then, of course, there's the small matter of a recently murdered aristocrat.

During the 1940s, Maurice Bendrix, a writer recently discharged from the armed service, falls in love with Sarah Miles, whom he interviews for a book. Sarah is married, but she and Maurice eventually give in to their mutual attraction, leading to an affair that lasts several months. Maurice's jealousy, along with the bombing of London by the Germans, seemingly leads to the end of their relationship. However, the reasons are later revealed to be more complex.
Squire Pierre St. Laurent returns from wars in India to 17th-century provincial France to find his estate confiscated by governor Narbonne, for back taxes, and resold to Katrina, a Dutch Countess. Katrina offers to return Pierre's property if he will help her get possession of the 'Star of India,' a fabulous sapphire, held at the moment by Narbonne.
