Em um verão do século 19, duas grandes famílias se reúnem para seu retiro anual de pesca na ilha distante de Haida Gwaii. Adiits'ii, um nobre encantador, acidentalmente causa a morte do filho de seu melhor amigo, Kwa, e foge. Adiits'ii é atormentado pelo que ele fez e dominado pela insanidade, tornando-se Gaagiixid, um ser sobrenatural enlouquecido pela fome. Ele sobrevive inesperadamente ao inverno e, no encontro do ano seguinte, as famílias tentam converter Gaagiixid de volta à Adiitst'ii, enquanto Kwa luta contra um desejo de vingança.

Paul and Kathy Plunk buy a small motel in a lonesome mountain region in Oregon. Their newfound tranquility is broken by a pair of guests who turn out to be wanted criminals on run from the police. They need money, so they assault the Plunks, force them to withdraw all their money from the bank. But the nightmare just begins as they take the Plunks and their baby with them as hostages.
