Tommy, 14 anos, órfão de mãe, adora conversar com Flash, um potro, presente de seu pai que viaja trabalhando num navio. Tommy fica com sua avó que acaba falecendo. Para pagar seu funeral, Tommy vende Flash para um rico e violento senhor, que o acolhe no estábulo para ensinar seu filho a montar. Ao ver Flash maltratado, Tommy foge com o animal e vai até o porto de Nova York encontrar seu pai.
