Unrest breaks out in eastern Helsinki as a Finnish family man gets hospitalized in the summer of 2015. Gangs of young people are burning down cars and public buildings, confronting the security guards and the riot police. The narrative goes backwards, towards the riots which mark the end of our movie. As the story begins, the unrest is still bubbling under, ready to explode any time. Vandalism and robbery are not uncommon in the suburbs; neither is violence towards the police and the security guards. Frustration, alienation, isolation and poverty corrode the asphalt surface of the multicultured society, otherwise relatively harmonious.

A young and ambitious civil servant Jussi finds himself being in charge of the environmental permit of a huge nickel and uranium mine in Northern Finland. The Talvivaara mine, led by a charismatic globe trotting visioner Pekka Perä is introducing an entirely new method of collecting minerals whilst creating jobs in one of the poorest areas in Scandinavia. Jussi slowly discovers that he has been led astray by several people and that the new method has serious downsides he did not forsee. The mine is causing environmental hazards that are being hushed down. A new application for another permit is brough to his table by the same mine. Along with the application comes an interesting job offer and a chance of a new beginning. Jussi has to decide whether he will play along and if so, with whom.

Vaarala, um fotógrafo romântico reservado, tem uma visão artística estranha da solidão: ele tira fotos em série de um banco de parque vazio em espaços remotos da natureza. Quando ele conhece e se apaixona pela espirituosa e indisciplinada Ansa, seu 'banco' é repentinamente preenchido. Mas, para estar com ela, ele não só precisa superar suas próprias fragilidades, mas também o perigo iminente do ex-presidiário volátil de Ansa e, em seguida, da própria Ansa, uma mulher propensa à impulsividade e impetuosidade.
