Rio Grande do Sul, 1924. Terminada a Revolução de 1923 entre republicanos e federalistas, o capitão republicano Pedro Arzábal, agora quer paz. Como recompensa pela sua bravura nessa luta entre chimangos e maragatos, ele ganha a posse de algumas terras, na fronteira com a Banda Oriental. Ao chegar nessa região, onde pretende estabelecer-se, ele se depara com a figura de Don Marcial López, chefe político da região, não muito disposto a compartilhar seus bens. Além de novos desafios, encontra os mistérios de Niña Leonor, que também está chegando, acompanhada de uma freira do colégio onde esteve interna. Todos percebem que a sua volta para casa ocorreu em função de algo grave que lá aconteceu.
