Unit Manager
Oito professores estão voltados exclusivamente para a elaboração de um enciclopédia. Nenhum deles é casado, pois acredita-se que ter uma família pode ser prejudicial para o andamento dos trabalhos. Bertram Potts (Gary Cooper), o mais novo dos professores, tem como função preparar a parte de literatura inglesa e quer incluir no seu trabalho as mais variadas formas de gíria. Assim anda entre a população fazendo anotações e encontra em Sugarpuss O'Shea (Barbara Stanwyck), uma sexy cantora de boate, uma fonte inesgotável de termos popularescos. Inicialmente ela não colabora, mas ela namora um gângster, Joe Lilac (Dana Andrews), que foi solto por falta de provas. A Promotoria pretende detê-la para interrogatório até conseguir provas contra Joe, então O'Shea tem a idéia de se hospedar na casa onde os professores estão reunidos, usando o pretexto de que vai colaborar na enciclopédia, pois a polícia não a procurará em uma casa habitada por intelectuais.

Nature reporter Orville Shanks retreats to the woods for material for his "Our Wild Friends" column and to volunteer for his favorite cause, the Boy Scouts. When Orville's editor, Crane, orders him to spice up his column, Orville's wife Melba writes a gossip column using animals as metaphors for people. Crane loves Melba's article and gives Orville a raise, and the column becomes a hit.

Larry Poole, in prison on a false charge, promises an inmate that when he gets out he will look up and help out a family. The family turns out to be a young girl, Patsy Smith, and her elderly grandfather who need lots of help. This delays Larry from following his dream and going to Venice and becoming a gondolier. Instead, he becomes a street singer and, while singing in the street, meets a pretty welfare worker, Susan Sprague. She takes a dim view of Patsy's welfare under the guardianship of Larry and her grandfather and starts proceedings to have Patsy placed in an orphanage.

To save his daughter Manon from falling into the hands of a vicious gang of pimps, convict Jacques Costard escapes from jail. Jacques' problems are twofold: he must keep Manon from being abducted into a life of prostitution, and he must also hide his true identity from the girl, who has been raised to believe that Jacques died a hero in WWI.
