Leopold Socha, um trabalhador de esgoto e ladrão em Lvov, cidade ocupada pelos nazistas na Polônia, um dia encontra um grupo de judeus que tentavam escapar da exterminação do gueto. Ele os esconde por dinheiro no labirinto de esgotos da cidade. O que começa como um acordo direto e cínico se transforma em algo muito inesperado.
