Since her divorce nurse Abbey lives alone with her 6 years old son Willie. Her ex-husband Ted may have Willie every second weekend. But when Ted marries Clare, who has two children herself, he wants to see Willie more and more often.

1946. O veterano de guerra americano Ivan Bibic (John Savage), que foi um prisioneiro de guerra, sofreu uma crise nervosa que só lhe permitia morrer ou sonhar. Assim, ao retornar para a sua pequena cidade natal, Brownsville, na Pensilvânia, ele só pensa em encontrar seu sonho: uma refugiada iugoslava, Maria Bosic (Nastassja Kinski), uma amiga de infância que se tornou uma bela mulher. Ele sempre sonhou ter com Maria o casamento perfeito, embora ela seja desejada por outros homens. Em certo ponto Ivan diz que sonhou tanto com Maria que ela vive em seus sonhos, não no seu corpo, e é verdade, pois os sonhos dele não são iguais à realidade.
