A retired union leader runs a restaurant by the highway with the help of his wife and his young son. One day a wounded criminal, his lover and his brother, all fugitives from law and being pursued by the woman's husband, forcefully seek out a hiding place. A wife walks out on her husband. While he waits for her to return, the husband watches television, drives aimlessly around the city and writes letters to her. He meets her at a bar and gives her the letters in the hope that she will read them and come back to him. After a few days the wife returns. The man goes back to the bar and finds that his wife had left the letters there.
