Pierre Wesselrin é um músico parisiense bon-vivant e falido, que um dia recebe um telegrama informando-o de que sua tia rica morreu. Como ela tem apenas dois parentes vivos, Pierre pressupõe que herdará sua fortuna, e convida seus amigos para uma festa celebrando a boa notícia. No dia seguinte, Pierre descobre que foi deserdado e que seu primo, que considerara um idiota, ficou com toda a herança. Sem um tostão, ele é expulso de seu apartamento, e como seus amigos estão todos em férias ou viajando a trabalho, ele é obrigado a dormir na rua.

Aldo Piscitello, a minor government clerk, is forced in 1934 to join the Fascist party. When the war comes, he finds himself able only to talk ineffectually in secret against Mussolini, even as his own son Giovanni is sent into battle. By the end of the war, Aldo has found the courage to stand up for his beliefs, but by then it is too late.

Matthew, a rich nationalist Jew and a contemporary of Jesus, regards the latter as an obstacle in this struggle to free their people from the Roman yoke by means of revolt.
