Taiwan's submission for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1986. In the story, the kindly and very efficient Chinese settlers are distrusted by the natives until they show that they are able and willing to cure an outbreak of plague. The daughter of the native Taiwanese chief has her own peace plan for the region, which involves finding the most eligible Chinese bachelor and marrying him.

In early Republic of China when Taiwan was still under Japanese occupation, people were oppressed, and their condition was miserable. A Kung Fu coach from China was invited to Taiwan. His name was Wan Chin-san. Mr. Wan established a Kung Fu School in a small village and refused any Japanese to be his student. For this reason, he was assassinated. When his son, Wan Ming-Chieh, heard the terrible news, he came to Taiwan in search of his father.
A mix of supernatural tone, comedic banter and nudity with musical numbers, it takes a while before this story of two scholars being courted and haunted by both, fox spirits and malicious ghosts, gets started. Do the scholars side with the fox spirits, trying to achieve immortality or are they being bewitched by it? It leads to a wild ending with a battle between humans, fox spirits and ghosts that seems more like a Halloween costume showcase than anything else.
