A Presidential candidate running against the Vice-President plans a trip to the Balkans to negotiate the release of American servicemen being held hostage. Before he leaves, he receives a disk documenting evidence that the Vice-President has been trying to revive the American economy by causing a war in the Balkans. He plans to show it to both sides in the hopes of ending the situation. However, Secret Service agents hijack the Concorde he is on and kill the pilots. Em Los Angeles Nick Beam (Tim Robbins), um publicitário, acredita ter descoberto que sua mulher (Kelly Preston) está tendo um caso com seu chefe. Ele então pega seu carro e começa a dirigir insanamente, até ser abordado por Terrance Paul (Martin Lawrence), um negro desempregado que quer roubá-lo. Porém, Nick ignora a arma do assaltante e vai embora, com o ladrão dentro do veículo, dirigindo sem parar até o Arizona. Gradativamente no entanto surge uma amizade entre os dois e Nick decide voltar para se vingar do seu chefe, roubando centenas de milhares de dólares que ele sabe que estão no cofre da empresa. Entretanto, surge um problema quando os dois começam a serem perseguidos por dois ladrões.
