Anton é um garoto de 12 anos, que vive com a sua família na Holanda durante o fim da Segunda Guerra Mundial. Um dia, ele testemunha um crime: as forças armadas holandesas assassinam por acidente um alemão. Para esconder o caso, movem o cadáver para o quintal da família de Anton. Logo, toda a família é acusada de traição, e todos são assassinados pelos alemães – com exceção do garoto, que consegue sobreviver. Décadas mais tarde, Anton é um adulto, e ele começa a investigar a real história que tirou a vida de sua família, confrontando os verdadeiros responsáveis pelo caso.
