Francisca Alegría
História
Francisca Alegría was born and raised in Chile. She holds an MFA in screenwriting and directing from Columbia University. Alegría’s short film And the Whole Sky Fit in the Dead Cow’s Eye premiered at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Short Film Jury Award. Alegría was a fellow at the Sundance Institute’s Screenwriters and Directors Labs.

When thousands of fish die in a polluted river in southern Chile, Magdalena, a woman long-deceased, emerges amongst their lifeless bodies. Magdalena encounters her widowed husband, sending him into a state of shock and prompting the return of their daughter, Cecilia. Magdalena’s presence and her effect on the environment stirs curiosity and fear among her family. As the past comes into focus, mother and daughter are met with the opportunity to change the future.

The film is an adaptation on the play The House of Bernarda Alba by Federico Garcia Lorca. The story modernizes the play by setting it on the outskirts of Miami. After the death of her husband, Bernarda Alba puts her daughters under a rigorous, traditional mourning
