O jovem Espen, conhecido como "Ash Lad", vive com a família em uma pequena fazenda que está em ruínas. Quando a princesa do reino é sequestrada pelo Rei da Montanha, um Troll gigantesco, uma grande recompensa é oferecida para quem conseguir salvá-la. Espen e os irmãos aceitam o desafio e vão em busca da beldade para que, assim, possam tirar a família da miséria.
