"Poovan" is a story set in rural Kerala about a young man named Hari who suffers from sleeplessness and the impact a rooster has on his life. Hari accidentally shoots an eagle, causing a baby rooster to fall into the care of his neighbor, Mariyamma. The rooster, initially mistaken for a hen, grows up to be loud and crows at odd times, worsening Hari's sleeplessness. Hari believes the rooster is the source of his misfortunes and sets out to get rid of it. The movie follows the chain of events that occur as a result of Hari's attempts to remove the rooster and the growing bond between Mariyamma and the rooster.
