Scientist, Alexander Tom thought he had it all, great wife, great house, career... that was until the death of his best friend and a random affair with an anonymous woman force him to re-evaluate everything. In the ensuing days his relationships with his father, his wife, his co-worker and Walela, the mysterious woman, contribute to his edification that life is riddled with intangibles, that complacency and routine have deadened him and that despite his scientific understanding of life, there are other forces at play.

Kate Mosley (Jennifer Aniston) tem 28 anos, mora sozinha e trabalha numa firma de publicidade. Isto não é desmentido pela "noiva", mas tudo se complica quando ele se torna herói ao salvar uma criança. Esta situação começa a lhe abrir algumas portas na empresa, mas surge um problema quando seu chefe diz que quer conhecer Nick. Temendo ser desmascarada, Kate pede que ele continue a farsa, mas algo inesperado acontece.

Henry Turner (Harrison Ford) é um frio advogado de uma grande empresa, que acabou de ganhar um caso usando um artíficio nada louvável. Porém toda sua vida é alterada quando, numa noite, vai até um mini-mercado comprar cigarros e ao chegar um assalto está em andamento. O ladrão acaba baleando Henry, que sobrevive mas perde sua memória. Inicialmente ele é tratado por Bradley (Bill Nunn), um fisioterapeuta, que faz Henry se recuperar fisicamente. Já em sua casa suas lembranças começam a ser refeitas mas de forma bem lenta, pois ele teve de reaprender tudo, inclusive a ler. Durante este processo de reconstrução Henry vai se revelando uma pessoa bem mais gentil e humana, que começa a questionar seu comportamento no passado.

A Los Angeles psychiatrist testifies for the prosecution in the trial of an accused child molester. Later the defendant, who is out on bail, is found dead in the psychiatrist's office, in what appears to be a suicide. Shaken, the psychiatrist moves to the mountains outside of L.A. Not long afterwards a detective he knows comes to him for help. A seven-year-old girl saw someone kill both of her parents, but is so traumatized by the event that she can't remember anything, and the detective wants the doctor to help jar her memory. Soon, however, the doctor and the detective discover that the parents' murder and the pedophiles "suicide" may be linked to a shadowy group of wealthy and influential pedophiles, and that the child isn't the only one whose life is in danger.
