Anna Holtz (Diane Kruger) é uma jovem de 23 anos que sonha em se tornar uma compositora. Como estudante do Conservatório de Música, ela é indicada para um cobiçado cargo em uma editora musical. Devido a uma série de eventos ocasionais ela é designada para trabalhar juntamente a Ludwig van Beethoven (Ed Harris), o mais celebrado artista vivo da época. Inicialmente descrente, Beethoven faz a Anna um desafio de improvisação, no qual ela demonstra sua sensibilidade musical. Beethoven a aceita como escriba, dando início a um forte relacionamento entre os dois.

O padre Luke Fraser (Simon Russell Beade) pede para Simon Kirkman (Stephan Dillane), um estudioso do assunto, inspecionar o local. Paralelamente Marion (Kerry Fox), sua mulher, atropela uma jovem e, ao levá-la ao hospital, fica sabendo que é Cassie Grant (Christina Ricci). Marion fica surpresa quando o médico lhe informa que Cassie sofreu apenas ferimentos leves, pois parecia um choque violento. Cassie só demonstra estar desorientada, mas isto é considerado perfeitamente normal, pois sua memória pode ter sido um pouco afetada. Rápida e informalmente se torna a babá de Michael (Harry Forrester) e Emma (Jessica Mann). Cassie passa a ter visões de pessoas da cidade sofrendo mortes bem violentas, sendo que ao tentar descobrir o sentido de tudo aquilo se depara com uma terrível verdade.

In 1920s Ireland, an elderly couple reside over a tired country estate. Living with them are their high-spirited niece, their Oxford student nephew, and married house guests, who are trying to cover up that they are presently homeless. The niece enjoys romantic frolics with a soldier and a hidden guerrilla fighter. All of the principals are thrown into turmoil when one more guest arrives with considerable wit and unwanted advice.

In 1880s London, pornographic bookseller Verloc is a double agent for the Russian government, providing information to Chief Inspector Heat about a lazy anarchist organization. In order for the anarchists to be arrested, an act of terrorism must occur. So Verloc decides to set up bombs – which leads to tragedy – not only for himself but also for his family, including wife Winnie and brother-in-law, Stevie.

Painter Dora Carrington develops an intimate but extremely complex bond with writer Lytton Strachey. Though Lytton is a homosexual, he is enchanted by the mysterious Dora and they begin a lifelong friendship that has strangely romantic undertones. Eventually, Lytton and Dora decide to live together, despite the fact that the latter has fallen in love with military man Ralph Partridge, whom she plans to marry.

The film is based on a true incident in Le Mans, France in 1933 called the Papin murder case, where two sisters brutally murdered their employer and her daughter. The murder shocked the country, and there was much speculation about the sisters, including allegations that they were having an incestous lesbian affair with each other.
