Em 1940 um rico, mas recluso, escultor de peças metálicas, Thomas Hudson (George C. Scott), vive numa ilha das Bahamas, onde se diverte, bebe e pesca. Invadindo o paraíso de Thomas chegam os três filhos de suas ex-esposas. O mais velho, Tom (Hart Bochner), é o mais próximo do pai. Andrew (Brad Savage) e David (Michael-James Wixted), que são de outro casamento, são bem diferentes um do outro. Andrew mostra afeto, já David mostra uma certa raiva em relação ao pai, que vem à tona numa inocente luta de travesseiros, quando David começa a socar o pai. No entanto esta raiva aos poucos se transforma em afeto. Paralelamente as notícias que vêm de fora não são nada boas, pois a 2ª Guerra Mundial se intensifica e a França se rende. Ao final das férias os três partem e Tom vai lutar na R.A.F. Um dia Hudson recebe a visita de Audrey (Claire Bloom), uma ex-esposa, que lhe dá uma notícia que modificará sua vida.
