Mas se, inicialmente, a sofisticação e a posição social de Inês entusiasmam João, no final ele acaba por preferir Leonor, uma rapariguinha de valores mais tradicionalistas. A obsessão e o ciúme levam Inês à loucura, que põe termo ao seu sofrimento matando João a tiro.
