É uma das figuras mais interessantes e também mais desconcertantes da arte contemporânea portuguesa. Poeta,arquitecto, arqueólogo, desenhador, astrónomo, pintor, Lanhas é um pouco de tudo isso. E é também um sonhador cujos sonhos são cuidadosamente anotados: os mais conhecidos são os de levitação. Na pintura, de certo modo, foi ele quem inventou o abstraccionismo, numa época em que as experiências nesse domínio eram totalmente desconhecidas, mais a mais sendo Portugal um país periférico e estando o mundo envolvido na guerra.
