Alessandro Francesco Tommaso Antonio Manzoni (1785–1873) was an Italian poet, novelist and philosopher. He is famous for the novel 'I promessi sposi' ('The Betrothed', 1827), generally ranked among the masterpieces of world literature. The novel is also a symbol of the Italian Risorgimento, since it is a fundamental milestone in the development of the modern, unified Italian language.

When she refuses his attentions he has her kidnapped and brought to a convent whose prioress is a nun as wicked as he is. The 1922 version is the most ambitious and spectacular film in all Italian silent cinema, with remarkable mass scenes and some images that triggered the censorship.
