Um assassinato cruel de um menino de três anos de idade, Saville Kent, em 1860. A polícia local falha na investigação, o que levou o governo a enviar o detetive Jack Whicher da Scotland Yard para a pequena cidade para investigar o caso. Whicher avaliou a situação e rapidamente chegou à chocante conclusão que o assassino deve ter sido um membro da família Kent. Todos, do pai de Saville até as suas babás ficaram sob suspeita. No entanto, Whicher foi levados ao caso quase uma semana depois do assassinato. As provas eram circunstanciais e a maioria das pistas já haviam desaparecido antes mesmo de iniciado o caso.
