Ines acompanha o seu namorado numa viagem de negócios à Noruega. Aí conhece a enigmática Maria, que vem de Osaka. O que parece ser um encontro casual transforma-se rapidamente numa intensa amizade. Uma noite, sob as luzes do norte, a sua relação chega a um fim abrupto. Ines deixa tudo para trás e voa para o Japão, adotando a vida de Maria.
