O filme conta três histórias de amor diferentes: Michael (Liam Neeson) é um escritor veterano, que acaba de romper com a esposa (Kim Basinger) e viaja a Paris, buscando novas histórias. Ele encontra na aspirante a escritora Anna (Olivia Wilde) uma amante e uma inspiração, devido ao passado sombrio da garota. O empresário Scott (Adrien Brody) está passeando por Roma, quando conhece a misteriosa cigana Monica (Moran Atias) e simpatiza com sua perigosa busca para reencontrar a filha pequena. Julia (Mila Kunis) é uma jovem mãe, traumatizada após perder a guarda do filho para o ex-marido famoso (James Franco), e conta com a ajuda da advogada Theresa (Maria Bello) nesta batalha judicial.

The Japanese 18-year old Kiyoshi has been living in the kitchen of his parental home for 2 years. His parents cannot seem to get through to him anymore and they are ashamed of him. To the outside world they pretend that he studies abroad. The only person Kiyoshi communicates to is his little sister. On the internet he has contact with youngsters who have all retreated from society and family life. It is with them that he talks about the things that occupy him most, such as drumming, sex, computer games, films, life and death. When Kiyoshi frightens the dinner guests the family is pushed into crisis.
