Pavel's mother hates his fiancee. When Pavel serves in the Army she writes him that Nastya is no longer faithful to him. Pavel decides not to return to his native town. But many years later he returns to his fathers funeral and finds out that Nastya died sometime ago. She left three kids orphans and her elder daughter is also a daughter of Pavel.

A satirical comedy of three novellas ("What an a impudence!", "By the laws of hospitality", "One hundred grams for bravery"), united by the common theme of drunkenness and alcoholism: the first one about an exemplary citizen who met an avid drunkard on the way to work, the second one about an incident at a party that occurred through the fault of alcohol, and the third one about a shy man before the first date decides to drink "hundred grams" for courage.

Primeiro filme de Tarkovsky em parceria com Andrey Konchalovski, produzido em 1960 pela Mosfilm. Serviu como trabalho de conclusão do curso de direção de cinema na VGIK onde estudaram e recebeu o prêmio de Festival Estudantil de Cinema de Nova Iorque em 1961. Sasha, um pequeno violinista de sete anos que vive vilipendiado pelos meninos da sua rua, inicia uma franca amizade com Serguei, piloto do rolo compressor que por ocasião está asfaltando a rua em frente ao prédio de Sasha. A história se passa sob o pano de fundo da reconstrução de Moscou no pós Guerra, ligando duas gerações.
