Após os eventos em As 7 Bolas de Cristal, Tintin, Milú e o Capitão Haddock chegam em Callao, Peru. No porto da cidade querem interceptar o Pachacamac, um navio a bordo do qual é o Professor Tornassol, que foi sequestrado. Tintín se infiltra no barco e descobre graças a Chiquito, ex-ajudante do general Alcázar e um dos sequestradores, que o professor ficará exacerbado por ter posto a pulseira do rei Inca Rascar Capac. Os sequestradores fogem da polícia e se dirigem aos Andes. Tintim e o capitão os seguem depois de conhecer um menino quíchua, Zorrino, que os guiará. Em seguida, começa uma aventura nas montanhas que os levará a descobrir um povoado inca escondido.

Durante umas férias nos Alpes com Milú, o capitão Haddock e o professor Tornessol, Tintim lê no jornal a notícia da queda de um avião nos Himalaias. Pouco depois, ele tem um sonho em que seu amigo Chang, ferido e meio enterrado na neve, pede a ajuda de um avião naufragado. Preocupado, Tintim viaja para Katmandu com Milú e o capitão, que continua cético. Com a ajuda de um sherpa, eles começam uma jornada até o local do acidente. Durante a viagem, eles encontrarão o Yeti e farão uma paragem num mosteiro enquanto enfrentam fortes tempestades de neve.

Strange things are happening in the evening at the mansion. Glass things break without any apparent reason. The Professor, somewhat apathetic to the whole series of events, leaves the following day to attend a conference on nuclear physics in Geneva. Foreign powers get wind of the Professor's work and send their agents to investigate.

Tintin buys an old model ship at a flea market as a gift for Captain Haddock, who tells him about the exploits of a famous ancestor related to it. Then, Tintin learns that it is not an ordinary model ship.

Tintin finds himself involved in a mystery related to a drowned man, a can of crabmeat and a ship called Karaboudjan. After investigating the ship, Tintin discovers that the shipment of cans does not contain exactly crabmeat.
