People of different classes, nationalities and faiths in different parts of a large country - each in their own way - are trying to spend this last day of their lives.

Nastya é uma garotinha que mora com na casa de sua avó e é dona de dois cães muito inteligentes, a cocker spaniel Yoko e Pirata, um cão sem raça definida (vira-latas). Em férias da escola, ambas planejam uma viagem para visitar seus pais. Ela resolve então, deixar os dois cães num hotel para cachorros, acreditando ser o melhor para os cães. Yoko e Pirata acabam sentindo-se excluídos no hotel e resolvem fugir e voltar para casa, ideia que os alegra muito. A felicidade canina é interrompida quando os picaretas do hotel revelam-se dois ladrões que tentarão roubar a casa da avó de Nastya. Just inside the front door is the lawyers wife, she tell Marina that he’s lost it and locked the children in their rooms and that he’s going to kill them all.

This is the end of the line- the Germans are about to retreat. He goes to a hospital which is being evacuated and is thrown out. Kicked out he wanders with another conscript- a failed actor turned postman. The postman is deafened by a shell explosion. They meet their Russian equivalents, others as bad at killing as they are, while other Russians and Germans kill one another around them.
