Remy Germain is a doctor in a French town who becomes the focus of a vicious smear campaign, as letters accusing him of having an affair and performing unlawful abortions are mailed to village leaders. The mysterious writer, who signs each letter as "Le Corbeau" (The Raven) soon targets the whole town, exposing everyone's dark secrets. This allegorical film was highly controversial at the time of its release, and was banned in France after the Liberation.

This French musical comedy was based on the stage play Mademoiselle Mozart, written by Yvan Noe, who also co-directed the screen version. Danielle Darrieux plays Denise, the owner of a music shop that is facing closure. Wealthy young Maxime (Pierre Mingand) falls in love with Denise but knows full well that she despises rich folks and would refuse to accept his charity. Thus, Maxime arranges to secretly buy the store then takes a job with the establishment as a humble sheet-music salesman. When Denise finds out that her new employee is actually her boss, she is furious, but rest assured that Love Will Find a Way. The lovely Danielle Darrieux is permitted to sing on several occasions, which she does enthusiastically if not altogether expertly.

Hélène, married to Larsonnier, has developed a crush for Germont, her neighbor. One night, she is abducted and she discovers that her kidnapper is none other than Germont. But, to her dismay, he does not act out of love for her : his only motivation is money, which he proves by asking her husband a five-Million-franc ransom. After a long hesitation, Larsonnier finally pays the sum and Hélène returns to him. As for Germont, chased by the police, he goes on the loose... Some time later, Hélène is kidnapped one more time, and again by Germont! But this time around, this the elopement of her dreams.

Small rentiers do not want their son to marry a young rich girl. They hijack letters and prevent meetings. But love wins. Defeated, the parents accept this union which shocked their petty bourgeois but honest spirit.
