William Schwenck Gilbert (Jim Broadbent) escreve as letras, enquanto que Arthur Sullivan (Allan Corduner) escreve as canções. Durante anos, a dupla Gilbert-Sullivan foi sinônimo de originalidade e sucesso nos palcos de ópera ingleses. Mas, em 1884, o mais recente trabalho de ambos, "Princess Ida", recebe apenas críticas mornas. Sullivan então rejeita a próxima idéia de Gilbert e a parceria entra em crise. Até que a esposa de Gilbert, Lucy (Lesley Manville), o leva à uma nova exposição japonesa, que o apresenta à uma cultura diferente e o inspira a embarcar numa nova produção, chamada "The Mikado".

After saving each other from jumping off a bridge, Henry Bell and Karen Knightly plot to avenge the people who drove them to suicide. Henry will ruin the life of the woman who married Karen's boyfriend, while Karen will work as a secretary for the man who took Henry's job. Whether revenge will be sweet – or bittersweet – is anyone's guess.

Henry Wilt is a more or less failed teacher who fantasizes about murdering his dominant, non-attentive wife Eva. At a party who gets stuck in an inflatable doll and makes a complete fool of himself. Eventually, he dumps the doll in a hole at a building site. However, he has been witnessed getting rid of the doll and when his wife disappears on the night after the party, the police and Inspector Flint have strong suspicions on Mr Wilt.

Two separate people, a man and a woman, find something very stirring about the sea turtles in their tank at the London Zoo. They meet and form an odd, but sympathetic camaraderie as they plan to steal two of the turtles and free them into the ocean.
