Em 1957, Jodorowsky fez suas primeiras experiências no mundo das imagens em movimento, filmando em Paris uma versão muda de um conto de Thomas Mann, sobre uma garota que vende cabeças. O filme, considerado perdido, foi encontrado na Alemanha. "Não tinha experiência nenhuma quando filmei A Gravata," disse Jodorowsky, "... mas, nele se pode apreciar que eu já era diretor. Um artista precisa ser como Jean Cocteau... esquizofrênico. Necessita ser muitas pessoas ao mesmo tempo, não apenas uma."
Baltasar, a young man in his twenties, is sent by his father to live with his aunt Dolores, an elderly widow and childless widow, on the Las Pataguas farm. There he meets his neighbors, the Araneda family, owners of the El Pantano farm and parents of the beautiful Humilde, with whom Balthazar falls in love. But the girl is "bewitched" by Saúl Araneda, her seductive cousin, whom the locals consider dangerously jealous.
