Lance Clayton (Robin Williams) tinha o sonho de ser um grande escritor. Mas, hoje, ele é um professor. Um de seus alunos é seu próprio filho Kyle (Daryl Sabara), com quem ele não tem um bom relacionamento. Quando Kyle morre de uma forma humilhante, Lance escreve um falso bilhete de despedida para evitar constrangimentos na família e esconder as condições vergonhosas de sua morte. O que ele não esperava é que o texto da carta ia se espalhar e Kyle, antes considerado um idiota, vira um ídolo no colégio. Com todas as atenções sobre ele, Lance tem que sustentar essa mentira e decide retomar sua carreira de escritor, escrevendo um falso diário de seu falecido filho.

In 1998 former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet visits Britain for medical treatment. On being tipped off, Amnesty International seize the chance to bring to justice a man they insist is guilty of multiple human rights violations. The newly-elected Labour government is initially amenable, and soon Pinochet is under house arrest (albeit in a detached house in leafy suburbia) and awaiting extradition to Spain. However, Amnesty are up against the complexities of British law, the vacillations of Home Secretary Jack Straw, Pinochet's former ally Margaret Thatcher - and the Senator's own vast reserves of cunning.
