A ceia de Natal está pronta. A família Colapietro irradia paz e tranquilidade. A casa paterna se enche de risos, gritinhos de crianças, muitas lembranças em comum, muitos segredinhos, histórias picantes e fofocas para trocar. Antecipando as delícias da mesa, todos esperam o momento de começar a mais esperada comemoração do ano. Então, a matriarca da família anuncia que ela e o marido estão muito velhos para continuarem vivendo sozinhos e decidiram ir morar com um de seus filhos ou filhas. É claro que ninguém quer ficar com os velhos, e a festa ameaça virar uma autêntica batalha entre irmãos, todos ansiosos para se livrarem da incômoda responsabilidade.

Italy, 1977. Professor Bruschi is a retired widower who lives according to a strict routine he set for himself. An ardent old-style communist, he has always been at odds with the unconventional lifestyle led by his son and his hippieish girlfriend Stella. When their four-year-old daughter is left in his care out of the blue after the two break up, the old professor becomes a sort of father figure to the girl, growing fond of her. However he's once again challenged when Stella also arrives for a stay in his elegant villa, reclaiming custody of her daughter.

Splendor is the name of an old movie theater managed by Jordan (Mastroianni), who inherited it from his father. The theater is in decay and only generates debts and trouble, but Jordan gets aid in his almost quixotian quest from projectionist Luigi (Troisi) and ushurette Chantale (Vlady). However, Jordan is finally forced to sell the Splendor to businessman Lo Fazio (Piperno), which plans to transform it in some kind of furniture store. When Jordan leaves the theater for the last time (the very first scene), he recalls the glorious days of Splendor and movies in general.

The 2nd is 'Quello dal basco rosso' (the one with the red beret). Sandro, a mature man, meets one of his former girlfriend and her daughter Daniela. Daniela couldn't have sex with her boyfriend because of a childhood remembrance. In fact she always remember her mother having sex with a man wearing a red beret. She discovers that man is Sandro, makes love with him and soon recovers from her obsession.

Eduardo accidentally discovers that he is adopted. His real father is dying, but before his death he said that his mother was the "Queen of England", failing to clarify that this is the nickname of Italian prostitute. But Eduardo is already rushing to the capital of England...
