Daniel Miller (Albert Brooks) ao dirigir pelas ruas de Los Angeles bate em um ônibus, o que provoca um acidente fatal. Ele vai então para o céu, e começa a viver uma vida parecida com a da Terra, as vezes até melhor. Lá ele conhece Julia (Meryl Streep), uma encantadora mulher, que o faz não querer voltar ao mundo dos vivos de jeito nenhum. Só que para conseguir ficar nesse "pós-vida", ele é obrigado a passar por um julgamento, onde terá que provar que encarou seus medos na terra e que teve coragem. Caso Daniel não consiga, ele terá que voltar e começar tudo de novo, e sem a Julia.

Three senior citizens in their 70s who live together are slowly decaying in endless days with nothing to do but feed the birds. One of them comes up with an idea - rob a bank. They certainly could use the money if they get away with it and if they are caught, what could happen to three old men?

Brooks Wilson is in crisis. He is torn between his wife Selma and two daughters and his mistress Grace, and also between his career as a successful illustrator and his feeling that he might still produce something worthwhile.
