Adam is a young farmer. As a child, fleeing the bleak reality of his mother's life as a prostitute, he tumbled from a mountain and was mentally injured. Years later, his mother is dying, so Adam sells their only cow to pay for medicine. Rosa, a beautiful young maid, fleeing the sexual exploitation of a wealthy butcher, climbs up to join them on their remote farm and dares to become part of Adam's world. A cycle of life begins again, in a remote turn-of-the-century village tied to the land and its animals.

A young man tries to enter the building of the Mammoth Cybernetic Supermachines Research Institute again and again but each time the doorkeeper spots him and kicks him out. The youth finally arrives with all his friends and a huge live bear from the circus where he works as an accountant. He is finally allowed in where he explains to the members of the directorate that he wants to work at the Institute, since he graduated in cybernetics and, besides, he has invented a machine for forecasting time of death. When the conniving research manager learns that their director is going to die in two days, he hopes to rise to his position.

Uma pequena cidade é de um dia visitada por um padre que está lá numa missão secreta. Ele é um membro da Inquisição enviado para investigar as atividades de um moleiro local. O moleiro e seu filho são descendentes duma antiga família cuja casa ancestral foi incendiada há um século, mas foi reconstruida a partir do zero. Pavel, um jovem estudante que vive em Praga em 1942, esconde uma rapariga judia no sótão do seu apartamento. Por entre a brutalidade do exército ocupante alemão, o amor floresce entre os dois. Ele é seu único elo com o mundo exterior. Então os dois são descobertos pela mãe de Pavel, que obriga os moradores do prédio a decidir se Hana pode permanecer.
