A Chinese food delivery boy is looking for his mother in New York City. And the picture he carries as his mother is actually a picture of Marlene Dietrich. It’s a black comedy about living in between cultures and how an individual finding a masculine identity in such environment.

Val Waxman (Woody Allen) é um diretor de cinema que, nos anos 70 e 80, esteve bastante badalado em Hollywood, sendo que hoje Waxman apenas consegue dirigir comerciais de TV. Até que a chance que esperava para retornar ao estrelato surge através de um produtor (Treat Williams) de um grande estúdio, que está atualmente namorando sua ex-esposa (Téa Leoni) e lhe oferece a direção de um grande projeto. Waxman imediatamente aceita a proposta mas, pouco antes do início das filmagens, passa a sofrer de cegueira temporária. Decidido a trabalhar assim mesmo, ele passa então a contar com a ajuda de alguns amigos para que possa dirigir o filme sem que os produtores e executivos do estúdio percebam seu atual estado.
