The organization they contact says that they will be happy to publish his writings, if he will commit suicide live, on television, in St. Peter’s square, while the Pope is delivering an address.

Após um ano de investigações, a comissão Heiniger concluiu que o assassino tinha sido Karl Eric Daslow, um louco que agiu sozinho. Entretanto o procurador Henri Volney (Yves Montand), que fazia parte da comissão, se recusa a assinar o relatório final e começa investigar o caso com sua equipe. The main character is a woman trapped in the long stifling marriage in a boring province. She has an affair with a traveling photographer, follows him to Paris, and then has a series of unsatisfactory but interesting relationships, one of which is with a woman.
