Europa, 1709. Rússia e Suécia estão em guerra. Dois guerreiros são exilados pelo Rei da França: um para o lado do César da Rússia, outro para o lado do Rei da Suécia. Porém, embora estejam separados pela guerra e por sua lealdade a seus países, o destino tem outros planos para suas vidas.
A man invites a call girl to his place. He pays in advance for 10 hours of her time. He tells her about his ex-wife and happiness he once had. Her story is very similar to his. Why couldn't they keep their love? Can they return to their previous lives?
One day Pavel, a young man wounded in the war, suddenly shows up at the home of a Moscow scientist name Krymov and claims to be his illegitimate son. Krymov denies this, but out of compassion he helps arrange a necessary operation for Pavel. Then certain things begin happening which suggest to Krymov that he may have a psychologically unstable fellow on his hands.
Tiny Soviet village by the sea, in the years before the Second World War... A very young girl, Vera, falls madly in love with an older military officer who is visiting from out of town. She leaves her home and family to live with him in various military posts where he serves with the army. Through the difficulties of army life, and years of war, her love for this older man survives, and she gives herself completely without reservation. This film is about friendship, loss, survival, loyalty, and the wonderful gift of unconditional love, which is only given to a few.
