O auto-intitulado imperador do Universo, o imperador do planeta Mongo, Ming (Max Von Sydow) planeja destruir a Terra por meio de seus artifícios tecnológicos. Na Terra, um jogador de futebol americano, cujo apelido é Flash Gordon (Sam J. Jones), se vê num acidente de avião com a bela Dale Arden (Melody Anderson), causado por um ataque de Ming à Terra. Perdidos após a queda, eles se vêem em meio a uma aventura interplanetária, após acidentalmente decolarem no foguete de Zarkov (Richard OBrien), um cientista que sabe da invasão à Terra e planeja evitá-la.
