Paris. Pierre e Renée, um jovem casal desesperado, alugam um quarto no Hôtel du Nord com a ideia de se suicidar. Contudo, as coisas não se passam como planejado. E outro casal, o misterioso Sr. Edmond e a prostituta Raymonde, acaba se metendo na história.
