A biopic about Austrian composer Johann Strauß.

Lily, a stunning photograph model, suddenly notices that hair is growing on her face and escalating to a real "man's beard". Her lover, Richard, who has just returned from a prolonged business trip cannot help her. On the contrary, she is so exasperated that she runs away into the night of the big city where she has her first experiences as a "man".

Judit is up to her neck in art studies and the elitist art community but chucks it all to pursue a successful career as a billiard professional -- not exactly a likely alternative in real life, but certainly more lucrative. Just as she is finally at the apex of her chosen second field, Judit encounters male jealously and/or aggression in the form of intentional snubs from this different class of snobs, or in the worse instances, rape. Director Kitty Kino portrays many of the male figures in this film as weak, or drunk, or simply offensive, and because of the emphasis on those traits, the film will raise objections from some viewers. On the other hand, many women might see this film and feel that at least it brings up the difficulties women can face in getting ahead in a male-dominated arena, instead of side-stepping or ignoring the role of male prejudice.

Bernhard Frankfurter, a young Austrian filmmaker, follows the trails and roots of several German-speaking filmmakers who had been forced into exil by Hitler faschism. He interviewed prominent and less well-known artists who were forced to leave their (artistic) heimat because they were politically or racially no longer "acceptable"... A documentary film in which the personal commitment of the filmmaker is purposely brought to the attention of the viewer.

After his father is murdered by the Nazis in 1938, a young Viennese Jew named Ferry Tobler flees to Prague, where he joins forces with another expatriate and a sympathetic Czech relief worker. Together with other Jewish refugees, the three make their way to Paris, and, after spending time in a French prison camp, eventually escape to Marseille, from where they hope to sail to a safe port

Over Waldbrunn, the romantic little village surrounded by majestic mountains, dark storm clouds brew together. Mayor Lechner is in the end with his wisdom. The railway line is shut down, the spa guests stay out, and the mountain of debt is long since higher than the highest peak. The news of the imminent incorporation gives the much-plagued, who now also has to worry about office and dignity, the rest. But need makes inventive, and so easy can be such a fancy rascal as mayor Lechner not get down. As a savior in distress, Oberregierungsregierungsrat Dr. Schröder and submitted to Lechner the plans for a huge project to rehabilitate the bankrupt community. When he is also the re-commissioning of the railway line in view, Lechner attacks. Dr. Schröder's promise to lead Waldbrunn into a bright future lets the otherwise distrusting Lechner blindly fall into a cleverly sophisticated trap. Even Bärbel, the pretty daughter of the mayor, falls to the worldly Dr.. Schröder in.

Although he spent a relatively short period of his life in Austria, Canadian-born John Cook (1935–2001) remained, in his own words, "Viennese by choice.” Having worked as a commercial photographer in Paris, Cook’s […] first “regular” production was Schwitzkasten, based on a novel by the leftist writer Helmut Zenker. Today, the film is considered one of the few undisputed masterpieces of the New Austrian Cinema: a freewheeling, tender, and strangely humorous portrait of working-class (and out-of-work) lives.
