The hard days of August 1941. Enemy troops approached Zaporozhye, the island of Khortitsa was captured, and the Nazis shelled the city from its high banks. Our troops sought to recapture this bridgehead at all costs. Schoolchildren - fighters of the "Young Chapaevets" detachment - helped the Soviet soldiers.

Shurik Kleymenov, the son of a famous ski coach, goes with his father to competitions. At first arrogant, Shurik, watching the difficulty of the path to sports victories, eventually begins to understand that sport can become a worthy goal for him in life. Meanwhile, coach Kleymenov finds himself in a difficult situation: the downhill track he chose did not live up to his assumptions and one of the participants is injured.

At the end of 1943, during the occupation in Odessa, a new specialist Kraft arrives at the shipyard and soon becomes a chief engineer. It never occurred to anyone that a Soviet intelligence officer was hiding under the guise of a leader showing official zeal. At the decisive moment, when the victorious offensive of the Soviet troops forces the German-Romanian invaders to leave Odessa, on the instructions of the Center, Kraft leaves with them for further work behind enemy lines.
