Com imagens raras, discos antigos e depoimentos pessoais de pesquisadores e descendentes, o filme investiga os primeiros discos de macumba, introduzidos por Marinho no início da indústria fonográfica brasileira, e a influência das religiões afro-brasileiras no samba e na cultura popular do final da década de 1920 em diante.
