Londres, 1874. Henry Jekyll (Paul Massie) é um dedicado pesquisador que há 6 anos está casado com Kitty (Dawn Addams), mas lhe dá pouca atenção. Com isso ela se apaixonou por Paul Allen (Christopher Lee), o maior amigo de Jekyll. Paralelamente Henry desenvolve uma fórmula que faz vir à tona o lado negro de cada ser e, ao aplicar em si esta droga, Jekyll se altera não só psicologicamente como fisicamente. Logo ele está na Sphinx, uma casa noturna cara mas de má reputação. Lá encontra Kitty e Paul, que conversam com ele. Logo Jekyll está dançando com Kitty, que não imagina que este desconhecido que diz se chamar Edward Hyde é o seu marido, que ela tanto evita. Este encontro marca o início de várias tragédias.

Hiroshima, 1959. Uma atriz francesa casada (Emmanuelle Riva) veio de Paris para trabalhar num filme sobre a paz. Ela tem um affair com um arquiteto japonês (Eiji Okada) também casado, cuja esposa está viajando. Nos dois dias que passam juntos várias lembranças vêem à tona enquanto esperam, de forma aflita, a hora da partida dela. Ela conta que foi "tosquiada", pois se apaixonou por um alemão (Bernard Fresson) quando tinha apenas 18 anos e morava em Nevers, sendo libertada no dia em que seu amor foi morto, já no final da 2ª Guerra Mundial. Por ter amado um inimigo ela foi aprisionada por sua família numa fria e escura adega e agora, 14 anos depois, novamente sente o gosto de viver um amor quase impossível.

The short stories of Guy de Maupassant enjoyed a renaissance in the early 1950s, thanks in great part to the Max Ophuls production Le Plaisir. In Trois Femmes, three De Maupassant stories are dramatized, each conveying the central theme of women falling in love. In the first, a black female carnival entertainer causes an uproar when she falls in love with a white soldier. In the second, a young bride is pressured into having a baby to collect a huge inheritance. And in the final episode, a pregnant girl is "adopted" and protected by a small circle of friends. In standard De Maupassant fashion, each of the three stories in Trois Femmes is capped by a surprise twist.
